Electronics Components Every Maker Should Own

Starting a maker lab means making one large, smart order rather than dozens of small panic-orders when a project needs something. This is the stocking list built from experience — components that appear in almost every project, quantities that make sense, and the tools you cannot do without.

Microcontrollers and Development Boards

  • ESP32 DevKit V1 × 3: Your primary workhorse for any connected project. Keep 3 so you always have one for a new project while others are in existing builds. ₹280–350 each.
  • Arduino Nano × 2: For 5V-logic projects, simple automation without WiFi, or students learning. ₹150–200 each.
  • NodeMCU (ESP8266) × 2: For simple WiFi-only projects or replacements. ₹180–220 each.

Sensors

  • DHT22 × 3: Temperature and humidity. Every environmental project needs at least one.
  • HC-SR04 × 2: Ultrasonic distance measurement. Water level, obstacle avoidance, parking.
  • HC-SR501 PIR × 3: Motion detection. Home automation and security.
  • RC522 RFID module × 1 + 5 Mifare cards: Attendance, access control demos.
  • Soil moisture sensor (capacitive) × 2: Irrigation projects.
  • MQ-2 gas sensor × 1: Smoke and LPG detection projects.

Displays

  • 0.96" OLED I2C (SSD1306) × 2: Small, sharp, 3.3V compatible. Works with every microcontroller.
  • 16×2 I2C LCD × 1: Slightly larger characters, good for readable numerical displays.

Actuators and Switching

  • 4-channel relay module × 2: Home automation, pump control, any mains-switching project.
  • SG90 servo × 3: Light mechanical movement. Parking barriers, simple robotic arms, pan-tilt mechanisms.
  • L298N motor driver × 1: DC motor and small stepper control.
  • Active buzzer × 5: Alerts and feedback. Pennies each, endlessly useful.

Passive Components

  • Resistor kit (10 values × 20 pcs each): 100Ω, 220Ω, 330Ω, 470Ω, 1kΩ, 2.2kΩ, 4.7kΩ, 10kΩ, 22kΩ, 100kΩ. Price: ₹80–120 for a full kit.
  • LED assortment (red, green, yellow, blue × 10 each): Status indicators, debugging, displays. ₹30–50.
  • Capacitor kit: 100 nF ceramic (×20), 10 µF electrolytic (×10), 100 µF electrolytic (×10). ₹80–120.
  • Push button × 10: Reset buttons, user input. ₹2–5 each.

Power

  • AMS1117-3.3 module × 3: 3.3V regulation from 5V.
  • TP4056 LiPo charger × 2: For battery-powered projects.
  • HLK-PM01 × 2: Mains to 5V for deployed home automation installations.
  • 18650 Li-ion cells × 4 + holder: General battery power.

Prototyping

  • Full-size 830-point breadboard × 2: Your main workspace.
  • Mini 400-point breadboard × 2: For tight spaces and small add-on circuits.
  • Jumper wire set (M-M, M-F, F-F): 120-piece sets. Buy two sets. Wires get lost constantly.
  • Perfboard (dot board) × 5: For semi-permanent builds.

Tools

  • Multimeter: Cannot function without one. A decent one (UT61E or similar) costs ₹800–1,500.
  • Soldering iron (60W adjustable): Yihua or similar. ₹600–1,200.
  • Solder (60/40 tin-lead, 0.8 mm): ₹100–200 for 100g reel.
  • Wire strippers: ₹150–300.
