The L293D is a quad half-H bridge driver IC in standard DIP-16 package — the classic motor driver for breadboard-based robotics. Drive two DC motors or one bipolar stepper motor at up to 600mA per channel, with built-in flyback diodes protecting against motor back-EMF.
The L293D (600mA) is for small motors — toy motors, small gear motors, light robotics. The L298N module (2A) handles heavier loads and comes with a heatsink. For most college robotics projects with standard gear motors, the L298N is the better choice. The L293D is ideal for compact PCB designs where the DIP package size matters.
