Overview

LM7805 5V Voltage Regulator (TO-220)

The LM7805 is the simplest way to get a stable 5V output from a 7–35V input. No PWM switching noise, no inductor required — just a capacitor on each side and you have a clean 5V linear regulated supply. Industry-standard TO-220 package, 1A max current.

Key Specifications

  • Output: Fixed 5V DC
  • Input range: 7–35V DC
  • Max current: 1A (heatsink required above 500mA)
  • Dropout voltage: ~2V (needs 7V+ input for stable 5V out)
  • Package: TO-220

LM7805 vs Buck Converter

The LM7805 dissipates the voltage difference as heat. At 12V input / 5V output / 500mA, it dissipates 3.5W — requiring a heatsink. For battery-powered applications, use a LM2596 buck converter instead for 92% efficiency. The LM7805 excels in low-noise applications (audio, precision sensors) where switching converter noise is unacceptable.
